"I know I'm not going to be the tallest middle in the gym," she says. "But that doesn't mean I can't compete with the tallest middle in the gym."
She points to a long history of undersized athletes who overcame the odds — Muggsy Bogues, Spud Webb, José Altuve, Lionel Messi and Simone Biles among them — as proof that size is only one part of the equation. Timing, technique, court awareness and competitiveness fill in the rest.
The numbers back her up. During her freshman varsity season, MaxPreps recorded 116 total blocks, 109 kills and 32 service aces — a block total that ranked 24th in California and first among San Diego Section Division III players. She also strung together at least two blocks in 19 consecutive matches.
Izzy's club résumé includes a Prep Dig Nevada Top 250 Expo Prospect Watchlist selection while with COAST Volleyball Club, along with Girls Junior National Championship experience in the 15 Open division. She now competes with East County Volleyball Club's 17-1 team, continuing to sharpen the reads, footwork and quick transitions that first caught evaluators' attention.
Her toughest opponent, she says, is often the doubt in her own head after a mistake. "When people doubt me, I don't want to argue with them," she says. "I'd rather get on the court and show them."
That drive carries extra meaning at home — her younger sister, Joy, started playing volleyball at nine years old, inspired by watching Izzy compete.
As her recruiting story continues, Izzy isn't asking college coaches to overlook her height. She wants them to watch what she does with it.
